LG38WN95C-W Thunderbolt Volume Control on macOS

Written by Arne in offtopic , tagged with digital nomad, hint, macOS

When I came back from my digital nomad adventures one thing that I missed was a big display to work on. So I bought the LG 38WN95C-W curved display for my M1 macbook pro. Additionally to that I also bought the Logitech MX mechanical. Very nice to work with and full macOS support but to my suprise the volume control didn’t work with the LG display. It just showed the volume control icon with an x.

I installed the Logi Options+ Software of Logitech to re-configure the keys but that didn’t fix the problem. After some research I found out that this is not a problem of the MX mechanical alone.

You also need to install this little open source helper app. It’s called MonitorControl. You can download it on GitHub for free.

This is what I did to get it working:

  • Connected the display via Thunderbolt
  • Installed Logi Options+ and allowed the app under macOS Privacy & Security to control the computer
  • Restarted the Logi Options+ app
  • Installed MonitorControl and left all settings by default

As always there is a solution for everything ;)

PS: The screenshots are in german. But you get the point.
